GNB Voc-Tech and Cuttyhunk STEAM Academy Host Three-Day Renewable Energy and Climate Education Event
May 20, 2024 – Cuttyhunk Island, MA
Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech and the Cuttyhunk STEAM Academy collaborated to host a dynamic three-day STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) event from Thursday, May 16 to Saturday, May 18, 2024, on Cuttyhunk Island. The event provided students and teachers from Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech with a hands-on learning experience focused on renewable energy and climate change, set against the scenic beauty of Cuttyhunk Island.
The event kicked off on Thursday, May 16, with participants arriving at Pete’s Place in the morning. They received a warm welcome before investigating the forms and sources of energy in Massachusetts to further understand why non-renewable energy sources are necessary. After lunch, the group headed to Barges Beach, where they engaged in a simulation of how fossil fuels are extracted, and the challenges in doing so, and explored the impacts of climate change, including pollution and solid waste. The “Power of Wind” Sculpture Project was also introduced. That evening, a presentation on Cuttyhunk’s original wind turbine was held at the Dining Hall, followed by a sunset viewing at Bunker Hill and a nighttime hike.
On Friday, May 17, the group visited Cuttyhunk’s Power Station and Solar Farm to gain insights into the island’s use of non-renewable and renewable energy sources, learning about the benefits and challenges of each. They assessed potential sites for wind turbines, revisiting data collected in March and conducting further evaluations. The “Power of Wind” Sculpture Project resumed at Lehner Cottage. Mr. Canastra spearheaded and with Dr. Southerland organized an amazing clambake for the dinner meal. With island residents joining in the meal, GNBVT students presented the electrical engineering plans they have been working on for the test wind turbines to be mounted on the school’s roof and on Cuttyhunk Island. The day concluded with crabbing at Fish Dock, rounding out the evening with a bonfire and s’mores.
Saturday, May 18, saw the completion of the “Power of Wind” sculptures at Lehner Cottage, along with presentations of artist statements. The event wrapped up with a cleanup before the group returned to New Bedford.
