Meet Jake Melo, a Senior in Engineering and Robotics at Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech. Before deciding to pick Engineering and Robotics, he was interested in all of the shops but says Carpentry and Architectural stood out to him. Due to his desire to design houses. After high school he plans on going to college, getting a Bachelors of Arts degree in mechanical or civil engineering. Jake will attend BCC for two years then transfer to UMass Dartmouth. His most challenging year was Freshman due to all the changes happening between a new school and COVID being at its peak. So far his favorite class is Mr. Faulkner’s physics class.

Jake enjoys many various activities out of school, his favorites being fishing and riding his bike. Jake also enjoys playing golf. He was playing football but after an injury, he was prevented from it. Jake also likes to go camping, his favorite place being Maple Park Campground. If he could travel anywhere it would be Bermuda, which he would like to sail there with his Dad. Jake likes to build and restore boats, he even built his own when he was younger, a 16-foot flat bottom skiff with 15 hp motor and he’s currently restoring a 16-foot Point Jude sailboat.

Jake works at an assisted living facility as a dishwasher and server, but is in the process of getting a co-op position with Dartmouth DPW. His music taste is pretty different than most others, he listens to anything, but enjoys metal and country music the most. Jake’s favorite sport is Football, and his favorite team is the Patriots. This past summer he sailed to Martha’s Vineyard with his family. Next summer he wants to gain 20 pounds so he can cut over the summer.
