Clara Barton was born December 25th in North Oxford, Massachusetts. Clara’s father was Stephen Barton who was in the local militia and inspired Claras patriotism and humanitarianism. In her early life, Clara would nurse her brother for 2 years after suffering a severe head injury from falling off a barn roof. She learned multiple medical techniques such as delivering medications and bloodletting.
Clara was a teacher in Canada and New York for some time, and she worked well with the students. After quitting her job at the school, the Baltimore Riot (one of the first bloodsheds of the civil war) took place, dozens of men would arrive injured in her hometown, and inspired by her father’s patriotism, she went and nursed 40 men on her own. After being told to rest up by her doctor, Clara took a trip to Geneva, Switzerland where she met Dr. Appia and was assigned to the American branch of the Red Cross. Clara also met Susan B Anthony, another remarkable figure in America’s History, and later joined the Women’s Suffrage Movement. Clara did lots of good things for the world, but it came with lots of challenges.
