Restraint Training for Certification

Thursday, August 16th
8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Peter Gwozdz will train anyone not certified in restraint training. According to the training manual Nonviolent Crises Intervention , this training program is designed to teach the individual to provide the best care, welfare, safety and security for the individuals in your charge, even in violent moments. This program is safe, non-harmful behavior management system management system designed to help human service professionals manage disruptive, assaultive and out-of-control individuals. Participants will learn the philosophy of the program and then learn to use restraints in various situations. Also, they should wear comfortable clothing since this is a program that requires that they practice restraints with each other. Lunch will not be provided, therefore, participants should bring their own lunch.

Recertification in Restraint Training

Friday, August 17th
8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Peter Gwordz will recertify anyone certified in restraint training. Participants will review the proper use of restraints and practice using restraints.

Bus Safety Training

Monday, August 20th
8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Rosanne Franco and the Security Department staff will provide a bullying prevention and bus safety workshop for all bus drivers in the auditorium.

This workshop will focus on creating “SMART Goals”, the development of sound goals that are critical to managing your own and your students’ performance. All licensed educational personnel are required to write SMART Goals to fulfill the requirements of the new Massachusetts evaluation instrument. Coffee and refreshments will be served.

Does your school have molecular biology equipment, micropipettes, centrifuges, and electrophoresis, but no one has shown you how to prepare a lesson or a lab for your students? Would you like to learn more about how to use this equipment and more information on the growing fields of Bio-Technology and Bio Engineering? The Greater New Bedford Vocational Technical High School, UMass Dartmouth / CUSP and the Ocean Explorium’s Ocean Academy for Teachers in a National Science Foundation Teach! SouthCoast program are offering an introduction to Molecular Biology and Bio-Technology instruction for middle and high school teachers. The workshop will be conducted by active biology high school teachers Scott Atkinson and David J. Welty, Ph.D. Scot and Dave are trained molecular biologists with over 20 years of lab experience. There will also be insights on possible applications of Math from Fairhaven Middle School Math Coach, High O’Mara and of Bio-Engineering from Tesfay Meressi, Ph.D. Associate Dean, College of Engineering and UMass-Dartmouth.

Suicide Prevention Training for Educators

Brian Fernandes, a suicide prevention advocate, will discuss teen suicide awareness and techniques for prevention to today’s educators. Information on the extent of the suicide crisis among teenagers will be provided. The program, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) will be discussed to the participants as well as recognizing the symptoms exhibited by students considering suicide and providing appropriate support and interventions for these children.

GLOBE Teacher Training

Saturday, October 20, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

GLOBE is an international, hands-on environmental science and education
program. GLOBE links students, teachers and the scientific research
community in an effort to learn more about our environment through
student data collection and observation. Teachers and students learn how
to take scientific observations, engage in scientific investigations by
conducting local research, and understand world-wide impacts by
analyzing international GLOBE data. The GLOBE partnership based at the
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution works with schools in the region
using hydrology and atmosphere protocols to investigate coastal ecosystems.

The October training will include:
1. An introduction to the GLOBE Program website and materials
(www.globe.gov)
2. Training in atmosphere and hydrology sampling protocols and equipment
calibration (air and water temp, cloud cover, salinity, pH, alkalinity,
transparency, dissolved oxygen), and practicing the protocols in the
field (dock in Eel Pond)
3. Sampling site definition and GLOBE data entry
4. Inquiry questions and student research
5. A science talk by a WHOI researcher (topic: water chemistry, nutrient
loading, climate and plankton)

Workshop registration is free, materials and lunch provided. Local
accommodations are available at a discounted rate from Inn on the Square

General Contractor’s License Continuing Education

Each class will last 4 hours.
We have been approved by the Massachusetts Board of Building Regulations and Standards as an approved site for 12 hours of continuing education for anyone in possession of a general contractor’s license. A class will be put together for Voc-Tech Staff and faculty before this is offered to the public in January. Class time may vary, although 3-4 P.M. is common. The class will be $75 for facualty whereas for the public will be $150.
All textbooks are available at additional fees.

Taking any standardized test can be difficult, especially if some time has passed since you sat in a classroom and were asked to write an essay. This preparation program will lead you through a review of basic grammar and the mechanics of writing, focusing on the 5-paragraph essay and the development of the responsive essay. Practice with VTEL type questions and scoring rubrics will offer test takers an opportunity to become familiar with the process and gain confidence in the ability to do well on the VTEL. This course is a 3-session review of the mechanics of writing, grammar review, and spelling. Emphasis will be on the development of the 5-paragraph persuasive essay and the development of the responsive essay.

Using Rhetorical Strategies to Analyze and Write Across the Curriculum

Do you want your students to think deeper, make connections, and want to write about it? This course will provide teachers from various disciplines background in rhetorical theory, a basis for analyzing texts, speeches, visuals and media. We will focus on how to teach students this framework and how to apply it to their own writing through in-class examples and activities.
A culminating project will be required in order to receive PDPs.

Metal Fabrication and Joining PDP Training

The Metal Fabrication and Joining Program would like to initiate a training program for PDP opportunity. We will have a five part Metal Fabrication Equipment operation and programming training, consisting of five two-hour sessions. The equipment will include; CNC Plasma Cutting System, Plasma Arc CNC Programming, CNC Press Brake, CNC Tubing Bender, Vertical Power Feed Band Saw, Hydraulic Shear, and Hydraulic Iron Worker.

Training time will be from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, the dates are 4/23, 4/30, 5/7, 5/14, and 5/21.
